He was the youngest patient at the dialysis unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba when I recently visited him. At 20, Emmanuel Odutola requires a new set of kidneys to stay alive. Lying critically ill with bloated legs, hands, face alongside several needles piercing different parts of his body, he is obviously going through intense pains, not just from the dialysis needles, but more from the realization that his kidneys—the pair of vital organs he needs to clear waste products from his body- — have packed up and only a replacement would save him from imminent death. His main preoccupation is how to raise the sum of N8 million doctors say he will need for a kidney transplant.
